Wood Handle Maintenance Guide for A. T S U K A

To everyone who has purchased A. T S U K A,
thank you very much for your continued support of A. T E N G U products.

My name is Makoto Kato from BrickWall Inc.

A. T S U K A uses a genuine wooden handle made from natural wood, designed to achieve the highest level of repeatability and reliability in competition.

Because of this, proper maintenance will help preserve both the performance and safety of the handle for a longer period of time.

In this article, based on advice from the craftsmen who produce A. T S U K A, we introduce the basic maintenance methods for keeping your handle in stable condition.

Why Wooden Handles Require Maintenance

Wood is a living material.

It naturally expands and contracts slightly as humidity and temperature change.

When the wood becomes too dry, small gaps may appear around the wedge that secures the axe head to the handle.

This can eventually lead to looseness in the axe head.

In competition, even a small amount of looseness can affect throwing consistency and may also pose a safety risk.

For this reason, maintaining the stability of the wood is very important.

Why We Recommend Linseed Oil

For A. T S U K A handles, we recommend periodically applying linseed oil around the wedge area.

Applying linseed oil helps to:

  • Prevent excessive drying of the wood
  • Allow oil to penetrate the fibers and stabilize the material
  • Maintain the holding strength of the wedge

As a general guideline, once a month is sufficient.

If you use the axe frequently or during dry seasons, slightly more frequent maintenance is recommended.

About the Linseed Oil

There is no need for special industrial oils.

Standard linseed oil that can be purchased from stores or online retailers such as Amazon works perfectly well.

Even household-grade linseed oil is effective for this purpose.

How to Apply the Oil (Simple Maintenance)

  1. Apply a small amount of linseed oil to a cloth or paper towel
  2. Lightly rub it around the wedge area and the upper part of the handle
  3. If too much oil is applied, gently wipe off the excess with a dry cloth

Notes:

  • There is no need to apply large amounts of oil
  • You do not need to coat the entire axe head
  • Focus primarily on the wedge area

This maintenance only takes a few minutes, but it helps preserve the confidence you feel when throwing.

A. T S U K A Is Gear That Evolves With You

A. T S U K A is designed to take advantage of the natural texture and flex of real wood.

With proper care, the handle will gradually adapt to your hand and develop its own character over time.

As it ages, it can offer even greater repeatability and reliability.

In Closing

A. T S U K A was created so that every thrower can focus entirely on the next throw.

With proper care, we hope this handle will remain a trusted partner for many throws to come.
